Back in 1989, Toyota shocked the world by offering a well executed luxury sedan that cost many thousands less than its European competitors. Fast forward 20 years, and Hyundai did the exact same thing with their first generation Genesis sedan. Like Toyota, Hyundai was known for making cheap cars. But the Hyundai Genesis sedan was so shockingly good, buyers quickly embraced the new luxury car from South Korea. The second generation 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis continued on its predecessor’s high-value mission, but added even nicer materials, more features, and a completely unique design language. The direct injected Lambda 3.8L V6 offered high-trim buyers 311-hp for effortless cruising, but now you can add an estimated 19 horsepower to your Genesis by simply installing an AEM 21-796C performance cold air intake system.

The Hyundai Lambda 3.8L V6 is a cutting edge engine, but it still makes power the old fashioned way: Air gets drawn in from outside the engine bay, then injected into the cylinders, where it mixes with the gasoline and fuels the detonation triggered by the spark plug. This ‘combustion cycle’ produces power as that explosion forces the piston down, turning the crankshaft and sending energy out to the wheels through the transmission. If you want to create more horsepower and torque, you simply need to add more oxygen to the mix. The stock air intake system isn’t able to deliver the quality of air needed for this engine to reach it’s full potential. The AEM 21-796C performance cold air intake system on the other hand, eliminates all of the airflow restrictions, and allows the big Genesis to literally breathe in more power.

To get more cold air to the engine, the AEM 21-796C intake system replaces the restrictive air box with an oversized AEM DryFlow synthetic air filter, surrounded by a special heat shield that seals against the underside of the hood when it’s closed. This creates a veritable cold air chamber, and allows the AEM filter to collect a large volume of cold air coming up from beneath the car, without ingesting any of the warm air from inside the engine bay. That oxygen-rich cold air then travels directly to the engine through a wide diameter AEM intake tube, that’s made from powder-coated aluminum, then mandrel bent to provide a turbulence-free airflow path. In addition, there are fittings for all of the factory sensors, so the ECU programming will not be affected.

A 2015 Hyundai Genesis 3.8L was fitted with a AEM 21-796C performance cold air intake system, then run on a chassis dyno. The results showed an estimated increase of 19 horsepower and 19 lb-ft of torque. That extra power came in at lower RPM’s as well, which translates to faster throttle response and a more “eager” feeling engine..
